Surrender – The Only Way to God Realization

Surrender to God is considered to be lol surrender at 20 greatest requirement of every religion. The word “surrender” is defined as: to yield, give up or over, submit, abandon, relinquish, cede, waive, or capitulate. In spirituality and religion surrendering means that a believer completely gives up his own will and subjects his thoughts, ideas, and deeds to the will and teachings of a higher power. There is no religion which does not emphasize the need of surrender to God as the first and the foremost requirement.

Surrender to God is considered to the most important requirement in Islam. In fact, the meaning of the Islam itself is “submission”, or the total surrender of oneself to God. Surrender is considered to be the simplest path to salvation in Hinduism. In Gita Lord Krishna clearly says,

Abandon all varieties of religion and just surrender unto Me. I shall deliver you from all sinful reaction. Do not fear. (Gita 18:66)

Yet surrender is the most difficult act for most people as surrender is not a matter of choice but arises only from deep conviction. Man is the only specie in this world who works according to his free will while other species follows their nature and tendencies. We are all trained to use our mind and intellect to know the truth and take decision in our life and it is extremely difficult to discard the reason and logic from our mind even if we wish to. Gautam Buddha always warned the man against blind faith as he said,

“Believe nothing, no matter where you read it, or who said it, no matter if I have said it, unless it agrees with your own reason and your own commonsense”.

Yet, even in Buddhism, the path of surrender gradually became the way of life. The very essence of Buddhism lies in surrender as evident from the following prayer of Buddhism which a monk sings every day.

Buddham saranam gacchami.
Dhammam saranam gacchami.
Sangham saranam gacchami.
(I go to the Buddha for refuge.
I go to the Dharma for refuge.
I go to the Order for refuge.)

Often, we wonder how one can surrender himself to another person or an ideology. If one surrenders, one may lose his identity and become a slave to the higher power or the master. Yet, if surrender is the very basis of religion and spirituality, there must be some good reason for it.

Surrender of Remote

How can we surrender when we can not take any decision without applying our mind? Let us take a hypothetical example. We all use remote control to view the different channels of the TV programs. The remote control acts like a link between our mind and the TV channel. As soon as we wish to change the channel, our hands press the number of the channel and the program on the screen changes. Thus all the time, we see the program which we wish to see. In other words the TV displays the program as per our free will. You may like to view movies, news, Stock market, Business or Music channels. The choice of all members of a family may different and the TV views the program is based on the free will of the person who has the remote control.

Now imagine that you give the remote to your child. Now you suddenly can’t see the channels you wish to see. The child is not likely to see any of the programs which you like. He may perhaps like to see Cartoon films, music channel and the program which he loves.

What do you do now?

Depending upon your nature, you may do one of the following:-

1. Use Power: You take the remote back and see the program which you like and let the child see the same program.

2. Make Adjustment: If you have another TV in your house, you may either switch on the other TV or ask your child to see his program on the other TV.

3. Escape: You may leave the room and do something else leaving the TV totally to your child.

4. Criticize: You continue to see the program and keep on ridiculing it and telling your child, how stupid the programs are and that he must see useful and good program.

5. Surrender: Sit with the child and enjoy the program as if you too like this program as much as the child.

Amongst the five options stated above, surrender may be the easiest and the most difficult option depending upon your relationship with your child. I you really love your children, a little bit of children must be in you. Hence you must be able to enjoy the programs which your child sees. There is no doubt that if you see and appreciate the program of your child, your child will love you more than if you criticize or leave the room.

However, there is a far more important aspect in being present with the child when the remote control in with the child as you can then understand the mind of your child. You can really understand the mind of your child by observing what he likes, what he enjoys, what he hates as the selection of the program is a reflection of the will of the child.

In the same way, if one surrender to God, and then one may know the will of the God.
